Phonics Lead: Mrs Wood

At our school, we are committed to ensuring that every child becomes a confident, fluent reader. We teach phonics through the Read Write Inc. (RWI) programme, a structured and systematic approach that helps children learn to read, write and spell with confidence.

Read Write Inc. begins in the Early Years and continues through Key Stage 1 and beyond where needed. Children are taught to recognise sounds, blend sounds together to read words and develop their understanding of spelling patterns. Sessions are taught daily and are carefully matched to each child’s stage of learning to ensure they make strong progress.

Through engaging lessons, children develop:

• Fluency in reading.
• Accurate pronunciation of sounds.
• Confidence in blending and segmenting words.
• Secure spelling and writing skills.
• A love of reading and stories.

Children regularly read books that are closely matched to their phonics knowledge, enabling them to practise and apply the sounds they have learnt successfully. As their confidence grows, they move on to a wide range of high-quality texts that develop comprehension, vocabulary and a lifelong enjoyment of reading.

We value the important role parents and carers play in supporting reading development. We encourage families to read regularly at home and work closely together to ensure every child has the best possible start on their reading journey.
